Standing Tall in the Canyon

Utah, A pine tree stands tall against the steep walls of Long Canyon in the Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument. The trees that grow in these high-walled canyons are survivors. They get enough light and are protected from the strong winds that occur up top, and slowly, very slowly, they grow to great heights. I loved how this was matched with the tall stripe of desert varnish.

Beauty Laid Bare

This hillside is a-blaze with color during the peak of Autumn, but after the glory is past, beauty remains. Barry Lopez talksk about seeing the 'bones' of the forest and here I think that shows.

Stormy Dawn in the Ampitheatre

Utah. Storm clouds swirl over the Towers of the Virgin formations in Zion National Park. On this unusual morning, the sky actually turned magenta - sunrise was happening out there, behind the clouds, and they took on the red hue of the morning, even though I couldn't see the sun. It was in fact so pink-red that it looked fake and rather odd, so I did dial it back just a little but left the warm overall glow.
